On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment was ratified with the 36th state, Tennessee, voting in favor. This was a tumultuous battle that went on for over 70 years in order to bring this amendment to fruition. Women fought against sexism, racism (outside and within the suffrage movement), traditions, and even other women to get this amendment passed. It also set the stage for the 1965 Voting Rights Act to apply to both men and women alike. Read our detailed timeline of the fight of the 19th Amendment's passage HERE.
